The President’s Award
The Gaisce (President’s) Award scheme is designed to challenge young people and encourage participation in a range of positive activities. Completion of the award provides evidence that the participant worked independently on their chosen areas, fulfilled their commitment in each category and developed a range of skills along the way. As well as the fantastic learning opportunities available, the receipt of a Gaisce Award provides a standard of personal achievement which sits perfectly on any CV.
Part 4 of the your Gaisce requirements entail your group to…Plan, prepare and undertake a 2 day, 1 night Adventure Journey in a group covering a minimum total distance of: Walking 25 – 35 km or Cycling 100 – 130 km over 2 consecutive days.
The West Cork Secret Activity centre can facilitate Adventure Expeditions for Gaisce groups. Our experienced staff will work closely with your PAL (President’s Award Leader) to guide your group in the planning, organisation and completion of your Gaisce Expedition. The WCS can facilitate expeditions on foot and have many beautiful, scenic walks where groups can trek during the day and by night. Groups partaking in the WCS Gaisce programme will take part in the following
- Orienteering through our 25 acre wood
- Team building games
- Military assault course
- Two guided walks (one by day and one by night)
- Camping facilities available onsite and a games room to entertain high spirited groups.
Walking route 1:
This is a 14 km walk and takes approximately 3.5 – 4 hours.
Particpants leave WCS and walk to the lovely, quiet village of Kilbrittain where they can take in well- deserved refreshments as well as investigate our infamous whale. The route then travels up through our beautiful woods and comes down adjacent to Kilbrittain Castle. Participants then walk to Harbour View beach, with its breath-taking sand dunes before finally completing the loop back to the West Cork Secret.
Walking Route 2
This is a shorter trek of 8 km and takes approximately 2 hours. Participants walking this route leave the WCS and follow a series of scenic, winding by-roads down to the coast line. They follow the coast road before eventually looping back to their point of origin.
Walking Route 3 (NIGHT Walk)
This is our shortest route whereby participants navigate the roads in a closer proximity to the WEST CORK Secret. The group will pass some historical war of independence monuments and learn a little local history. The 3 km route takes participants 45mins – 1 hour.
